Setting up minicom has always caused me hastle... follow these steps:

  1. install minicom with your favourite package manager $ yum install minicom
  2. add any users that want to make use of serial ports to the 'dialout' group (on Fedora 12.0)
  3. create /etc/minirc.* files with group set to 'dialout' and permissions of 664
  4. set group to 'dialout' and permissions to 660 for any serial ports you wish to use (/dev/tty*)
