Ubuntu server 12.04 from fresh

Taking a 'Fresh' VM, you will need to do a few things before it can be used. Here is a checklist:

Rename the VM's files and machine

If the files started as Fresh (Ubuntu x64 12.04 LTS).*, rename them to a more project-specific name. You will then need to open the *.vmx file, and modify its contents.

For example, find & replace Fresh (Ubuntu x64 12.04 LTS) with ProjectName.

Also locate and modify the displayName="" line.

Rename the files Fresh (Ubuntu x64 12.04 LTS).* to ProjectName.*.

Wipe off the old NIC

Often not necessary Startup the VM, and clean out /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules.

Change the hostname

In the following files:

• /etc/hostname
• /etc/hosts

And run hostname <new-name>
